Divine Lunga says ‘sad’ Mamelodi Sundowns need to bounce back against Siwelele

Sundowns host Siwelele on Saturday before they travel to TS Galaxy for their final league game of the season, as they end their campaign early with the CAF Champions League final against AS FAR of Morocco on the horizon.

The Brazilians were held to a 1-1 draw by Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday, which has handed the initiative to Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand, a much superior goal difference and trail by only three points.

“We were a bit disappointed because we wanted maximum points, even though it was not an easy game,” Lunga said of the Chiefs draw. “It was a tough game and a big game, and everyone expected us to collect maximum points.

“But football always gives you different dynamics. The boys were sad after the game, but we tried to recover quickly because we have another game coming.

“We had to bring ourselves together so that we can focus on the next game against Siwelele. That one is water under the bridge now, and we have to focus on the new one.”

Lunga believes the fact they have opened the door for Pirates does not change their thinking going into the Siwelele clash.

“There is nothing big or new about it. We have to take it one game at a time, as we always do at Sundowns. We don’t have to put ourselves under any pressure. We just have to focus on winning our games one at a time,” he said.

“I think that is a good thing for us because we have been doing it for so long. We cannot change it now.”

Three draws in their last five league games has been the issue, as has an inability to put teams away. Siwelele, who are pushing for a top-eight place, have drawn four of their last five and have become a tough nut to crack under coach Lehlohonolo Seema.

The teams also played to a 1-1 draw in their reverse fixture earlier this campaign. Sundowns simply cannot afford to be held again.

“We know Siwelele have been doing well in the past few games. We don’t expect an easy game, especially with the league about to end, because everyone wants to finish their season in a good way,” Lunga said.

“We always give every team respect. There is no smaller team. We give them big respect, and Siwelele have been doing well in their past few games.

“We are not expecting an easy game or a walkover. It is going to be difficult and they are going to fight. But we are ready, we will bring our A-game and try to collect maximum points.”
