Which current Bafana Bafana players have the most goals and who is climbing the list fast?

They have scored 61 goals between them, with playmaker Themba Zwane leading the way on his return to the team.

He has 12 goals in 51 caps, a good return for a player in his position, though you always wonder why he does not score more for club and country with his immense talent.

He netted his first goal against Burkina Faso in his 13th cap in 2017, while his last was against Nigeria in what proved a crucial World Cup qualifier in Uyo in 2024 as the teams played to a 1-1 draw.

He is the leading scorers among midfielders for Bafana, with two more than Teko Modise (10).

Striker Lyle Foster has 10 goals in his 28 caps, a ratio he will be desperate to improve.

It took him nine appearances to open his Bafana account, a fine strike away in Morocco in June 2022, after which he scored four times in his next four games.

If you take his international career from that point, 10 goals in his last 20 caps makes for better reading.

Next on the list of scorers among the current squad is Teboho Mokoena, who has nine to his name in 54 caps, the same number as the legendary Doctor Khumalo.

Some of those have been crucial strikes in World Cup qualifiers and at the Africa Cup of Nations finals, and when Bafana need a goal, he has often come up trumps.

Oswin Appollis has quite quickly reached seven goals in 23 caps, a good ratio for a winger. All of those goals have come in the last 18 months, making him Bafana’s most prolific player in front of goal over that period. He has four goals in his last six caps, including two at the recent Africa Cup of Nations.

Evidence Makgopa has five goals to his name in 24 caps, while the return of winger Bongokuhle Hlongwane also brings goals. He has four in 18 international appearances.

Thalente Mbatha (13 caps) and Aubrey Modiba (45) have three goals each, while Jayden Adams has two.

Six players have found the back of the net once before – Thapelo Maseko, Relebohile Mofokeng, Tshepang Moremi, Khuliso Mudau, Ime Okon and Sphephelo Sithole.

Okon’s goal came in the 2025 COSAFA Cup when he netted against Zimbabwe.

Mofokeng will want to add to the goal he scored against Lesotho in the World Cup qualifier played in March last year. The result of that game was overturned due to an administrative error, but the statistics remain in place.

Bafana face Panama in Durban on Friday, before another clash in Cape Town on Tuesday.
