EXCLUSIVE: North Macedonia forward Musovski on finding home in Seattle and World Cup hopes

Also, the 30-year-old came close to equalling the club's single-season goalscoring record with 18 goals scored across all competitions, but Obafemi Martins and Raul Ruidiaz's record (19 goals) stayed intact in the end.

Subsequently, the Sounders awarded Danny Musovski with a new contract until 2027/28 at the least, and the prolific goalscorer opened up in this exclusive interview with Flashscore about finding home in Seattle, his breakout season in the MLS and the exciting opportunity to play international football with North Macedonia in the upcoming World Cup playoffs.

"It's definitely something. I'm really happy that it got done. I feel extremely blessed to be part of such a great organisation, and to be able to extend that now for a couple more years is definitely something I'm really grateful for. For Brian Schmetzer (coach) and Craig Waibel (general manager) to see my future here for the next two years is just awesome, and I really could not be happier," reflects Musovski on prolonging his stay in Seattle.

The US-born forward spent most of his professional career playing in the USL Championship and the MLS, respectively, for various clubs such as Los Angeles FC and Real Salt Lake most recently, but with the new contract, Musovski will have spent more time in Seattle than at any other club during his career. When quizzed on why that is so, he responded: "I just think it's a place where I've meshed well. The team has a winning culture. The players have all won championships, and the coaches have all won championships.

"For me to come in here, it's been easy to adjust and get along with such a good group of guys who have such a good habit of winning. It's really brought out the best in me as a player. That's why when I've been able to get on the pitch, I've been able to do well, because I think all of that has influenced it.

"It's definitely a place I now call home, and it's the longest I've been on an MLS team, so I think that definitely plays a big part in it."

Even though the Sounders were eliminated by Minnesota United in the first round of the MLS Cup last season, the 2025 season was the most productive one in his career to date, as the No. 19 was the squad's top scorer with 18 goals across all competitions, which included a five-match scoring run and thus tying Ruidiaz's record for such a feat.

"Last year was an amazing year with a lot of great opportunities. A lot of it comes with experience, age, environment and the coaches helping a lot. It's a team that just has a culture of winning, so when you step on that pitch, you know what you have to do. It's definitely something you learn in training and from the environment," he added.

"Last year was a good example of preparation meeting opportunity. Jordan Morris was injured for a lot of the year, so I had to step in and play forward, and I got a good run of games. I was able to be in a good place and a good flow state and have a lot of success. The big thing was just getting a ton of opportunity, and that led to success on the pitch," analyses Musovski.

The coach, Brian Schmetzer, led Seattle Sounders to the club's first-ever MLS Cup title back in 2016 and then again in 2019, and the title-winning tactician is one of the main factors behind Musovski enjoying himself on the pitch and scoring for fun last season.

The versatile attacker who can play both on the wing and through the middle hailed Schmetzer's influence, and it sounds like the Rave Green's ultimate goal is to return to the MLS throne again this season and be among the accolades.

"It's been great working with Schmetzer these last couple of years. He's such a good coach. He's had so much success in the MLS, and he's probably up there among the top three or four all-time coaches in the league. I think that's for a reason.

"He does a really good job motivating the guys and making sure we're focused on the right things going into each game. When you're in it day-to-day, you understand why he's had the success he's had as a coach. He's definitely helped me and helped everybody on the team, and the success follows on the pitch," explains Musovski.

Musovski proud to represent country of his parents

Born as Daniel Musovski in Henderson, Nevada, to Macedonian parents in a Macedonian household, Danny is eligible to represent the North Macedonia national team after recently obtaining his citizenship, which made him available for a debut call-up ahead of the March international break.

The Macedonian coach, Goce Sedloski, immediately named the 30-year-old in the squad for the upcoming match against Denmark in the 2026 World Cup playoff semi-finals, and the Sounders forward looks set to make his debut on March 26th at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen with his family watching from the stands.

"I'm just really excited to be representing Macedonia. When I got that call in the off-season, it was something I was very excited about. To represent any national team is such an honour, and to get that call from North Macedonia, especially with the big games they have coming up, is something I'm really excited for. You want to represent the country well, as well as your family and yourself," Musovski proudly explains.

Although North Macedonia are yet to feature at a World Cup final tournament, the Macedonians reached the Euros in 2021, which was the national team's first-ever major tournament in their history. Prior to that tournament, the then-coach, Igor Angelovski, revealed that back then, Musovski was not fully committed to playing for the Lynxes, but the player clears the air now and shares his side of the story: "I think that was probably a bit of a miscommunication between Igor and myself. It wasn't that I wasn't committed to playing for the Macedonian national team. It was back in 2020 when I had just entered the MLS, and we were in the playoffs with LAFC, and I was starting at the time.

"They were calling me in for a friendly while we were in the middle of the playoffs. I think they misunderstood that as me not being committed, but that's definitely not true. It's something I'm extremely grateful for.

"I actually hadn't heard back from them until now, so six years later, I got the call again to represent the national team. Of course, I'm extremely grateful, and it's coming at a good time, so I'm really excited to play for the country," he reveals.

Now, a potential dream scenario arises for Musovski, as he boasts a chance to help the Macedonian national team secure a place at the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Canada, Mexico and his birth country, the United States.

"I think that would probably be the biggest dream for every player, to play in the World Cup. That's the pinnacle for any athlete. It's the biggest sporting competition in the world by a large margin. It's every player's dream to play in it.

"For me, the dream would be to play for Macedonia and represent my country and my heritage in such a big tournament on the world stage. That would be an incredible experience. We're going to try our best to qualify and hopefully be in the USA, Mexico and Canada for that World Cup," adds Musovski.

Finally, despite the Macedonians being the underdogs against the favoured Denmark, the belief is there, and Musovski is confident of success in Copenhagen first and then, picks Ireland as his preferred opponent for the away final, which will be held just a few days later on the 31st of March.

"I definitely believe we're going to win. I don't think any professional soccer player believes they're going to lose a game. We're going into Denmark hoping to get a win. Denmark are a really good team, so it's definitely going to be a tough competition. But Macedonia have a good team as well, so if we put in a good showing, we can do well and hopefully qualify for the World Cup," concluded Musovski.
